Hands on Hearts
Hands on Hearts is a program dedicated to bringing the educational benefits of a cardiac anatomy dissection labs to middle school students in rural areas surrounding Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Hands on Hearts identifies an outstanding senior Anatomy and/or AP Biology student to implement the program's yearly agenda.

Supplies

Scalpels either for whole class or just for Director and assistants. The number depends on whether or not the host school wants the classes to handle them or not.

Gloves can be latex or plastic. Some people may be allergic to latex so plastic may be a safer option.

Probes will be needed for the whole class in order to properly identify a coronary artery and other various anatomical parts.

Dissection Trays are needed for the dissection itself and will be provided by Lincoln if they are not available at the host school.

Surgical Scissors are used to make cuts through the atrioventricular septum.

Diagrams and written instructions provided by the Director.

And of course, the pig hearts in enough quantity to benefit the classroom; perhaps two people to one heart or each person to their own.
